Different ways you can prevent rust

Om Enterprises: Different ways you can prevent rust

Rust is the number one enemy of metal, specifically, iron-containing ones. It slowly deteriorates its surface making it less sturdy and it turns the iron and steel into powdery flakes.

You’ll instantly notice rusting a mile away just by looking at the surface of the metal. It turns into an orange coloured surface that has a rough surface which is all in all, not a pleasant sight to look at.

If you have furniture, appliances or some parts of your house that are made of metal, you’d want to avoid this from happening as much as possible. This is because it can instantly destroy the surface altogether. Thankfully, you don’t have to do it alone as we here at Om Enterprises has your back.

Throughout our years in the industry and working with metals all the time, we have found some ways to prevent this from happening and we want to share them with you! In this blog, you’ll find different tips that will help you take care of your metal-based equipment. If you want to learn more, read on!

What causes rust?

As with any other problem, you first have to determine its root cause. That’s why before we can tackle how you can avoid rust from happening, we first have to let you know what causes it. Rust is the natural reaction that occurs to steel when the iron particles become exposed to water/moisture and oxygen. Another example is when metals are introduced to acidic substances and then left to dry.

So, the short answer to preventing rust from happening is by avoiding metal to come in contact with moisture. However, it’s easier said than done. Now that you’ve learned the main reasons behind the formation of rust, it’s time for you to find out how to avoid them!

Use stainless steel

If your main concern is preventing rust from forming on your pans and pots, we recommend you get their stainless steel versions. This way, you don’t have to do anything to prevent anything as they are already equipped with a natural shield called chromium oxide.

The reason why chromium oxide is allowed to form on the surface of stainless steel is that it has low levels of chromium, 11%, to be exact. This protective film prevents rust from forming on the surface of stainless steel.

It can also reform when it’s damaged so you don’t have to worry about being gentle when washing them using steel wools. If this layer of protection isn’t enough for you, you can further enhance it by adding nickel.

Some of the cooking utensils that are made of stainless steel include:

  • Cooking pots
  • Frying pans
  • Chef’s knife
  • Saucepan
  • Thongs
  • Spatula.

Galvanizing

Galvanizing is the main method of rust prevention and it’s also by far the most effective. Hot-dip galvanization involves dipping iron and steel objects in zinc to offer a layer of protection against rust. This prevents oxygen from reaching the metal underneath and the zinc acts as a sacrificial metal.

Even though this process doesn’t completely stop the rusting process, it effectively slows it down prolonging the life of your favourite metal objects. This is usually done to metal pieces that will be used in constructing houses and buildings to ensure that they can last for a long time and withstand any extreme weather conditions.

Keep them dry

When it comes to taking care of metal objects, water is your number one enemy. As we have stated earlier moisture is the main cause of rust. If you’ll notice, the majority of the rusty things that you’ll see is outside such as cars, water tanks and gates. This is because when it rains, the oxygen molecules in water come in contact with the iron and forms iron oxide before they’re left out to dry.

For car owners, their solution to this problem is by having a garage. However, sometimes that’s not enough as some garages are considered a humid environment where rust can still form. If this happens, we would recommend getting a dehumidifier.

Keep them clean

Another simple yet effective way you can prevent rust from forming on your car or gate is by keeping them clean. Throughout the day, these things are exposed to different elements such as mud and dirt and leaving them on the surface will cause rust.

The longer you let dirt and mud stay on the surface of your precious metal object like your car, the harder it will be to clean off. That’s why it’s important to check them every once in a while so that you can immediately wash off any dirt.

Avoid scratches

When you’re handling metallic objects, be careful not to scratch their surface. This will expose more metal and it will create a pocket where water can build up when it’s exposed to moisture. If you think that the metal object is exposed no matter what you do, try getting corrosion-resistant steel instead.

If you’re letting other people handle huge chunks of metal objects to use for your house, encourage them to wear protective guns. Not only will this protect their hands but it will also prevent them from scratching the surface.

Maintain them regularly

Sometimes, the build-up of rust is inevitable and they’ll form whatever you do. When this situation happens to you, the best thing that you can do is to maintain that metallic object regularly.

This means that when you see even the tiniest formation of rust, scrape it off immediately and wash it off with a cleaning solution. There are various solutions that you can buy in hardware stores and home depots but if you want to save money, you can easily make on yourself at home. This solution requires you to only mix warm water and soap.

You can also buy a metal conditioner and apply it to the metallic object after cleaning it with your homemade solution to help prevent oxidation. If you think that you’ve damaged the surface after scraping the rust off, you can always apply a fresh new coat of paint.

Buy quality metal

Preventing metal from rusting starts from the kind of metal that you’ll get in the first place. When shopping for any kind of metal, make sure to buy from a reputable company. Some companies have mastered the design of creating metal so that it would have proper air circulation that prevents rust from forming.

To be successful in choosing which metal object to buy, we encourage you to ask the company’s representative directly. For example, if you’re shopping for a new cooking pan, you can ask them which type of protection does the specific item have.

It also helps to look at the price. We’re not saying that you should always choose the more expensive variant but if an item is cheap, chances are they’ve cut corners in manufacturing to achieve that price. This means that it’s not of high quality and you’ll end up spending more because they’ll just break easily.

If you’re buying bulks of metallic construction materials, we encourage you to search for different options online. This will help you familiarize yourself with the company and their products. Most importantly, you’ll get to see feedback from their clients just like with what we have on our website here at Om Enterprises.

Customer feedbacks are the most honest reviews that you can see online because they’ve experienced the product first hand. This means that they’re not selling anything and they’re just expressing their experiences.

Use weathering steel

Weathering steel, also known as corten is a type of steel that’s specifically designed to eliminate the need for paint as it will naturally develop a rust-like finish as it stands over the years.

Corten steel is made up of various components such as nickel, copper and chromium, also known as alloying elements. This takes up to 21% of the material which causes it to form the natural protective rust coating that helps reduce corrosion.

Apply protective coating

One of the most common ways to prevent rust from forming on any metal object is to apply a protective coating. These can either help slow down the rusting process or prevent it from happening altogether.

There are several protective coatings that you can choose from with each one varying in its effect. Here are some of the most popular ones that you can try:

Bluing

Bluing is the method of coating the metal object in a bluing solution made from water, potassium nitrate and sodium hydroxide. This procedure is mostly used with smaller metal objects and it only provides limited protection against rust.

The reason why it’s called bluing is because of the blue-black finish that the metal object will have after coating it with the solution.

Powder coating

Powder coating involves applying different kinds of dry powder on the surface of the metal object through an electrostatic spray process. The powders available for this method include:

  • Urethane
  • Epoxy
  • Acrylic
  • Polyester
  • Nylon
  • Vinyl.
